Ready for the Water? Your California Fishing License Checklist

Navigating the licensing requirements is the first step toward a successful outing with Jacob Frye’s Guide Service. Whether we are drifting through Anderson and Colusa or exploring the depths of Shasta Lake, staying compliant with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) ensures your day remains focused on the catch.

Who Needs a License?

In California, every angler 16 years of age or older must possess a valid sport fishing license to take any fish, shell fish, reptile, or amphibian. This applies to both residents and visitors traveling from out of state.

2026 License Pricing & Options

California offers several tiers of licenses depending on your residency and how long you plan to fish.

License Type Resident Price (Approx.) Non-Resident Price (Approx.)

1-Day Voucher $20.26 $20.26

2-Day Voucher $31.06 $31.06

10-Day License N/A $63.10

Annual License $61.82 $166.81

Note: Annual licenses in California are now valid for a full 365 days from the date of purchase, rather than the old calendar-year system.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

While the base license covers both inland and ocean waters, specific "validations" or stamps are required depending on our target species:

  • Steelhead Report Card: Mandatory if we are targeting Steelhead on the Sacramento River.
  • Ocean Enhancement Validation: Required for fishing ocean waters south of Point Arguello (not typically required for our Gold Beach/Northern CA coastal trips, but always good to verify).
  • Bay-Delta Sport Fishing Enhancement: Generally required for the Sacramento River delta regions.

Special Exemptions and Youth Rules

  • Youth: Anglers under 16 do not need a license to fish, which makes our family-friendly trips even more accessible.
  • Seniors/Disabled Veterans: Reduced-fee licenses are available for low-income seniors (65+) and disabled veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or greater.
  • Free Fishing Days: California typically offers two days a year (usually in July and September) where no license is required for any angler.

Where to Buy Your License

You can obtain your license through three primary methods:

  1. Online: Visit the CDFW Online License Site. You can save a digital copy to your phone.
  2. Local Retailers: Many bait and tackle shops in Anderson and Redding, as well as large retailers like Walmart or Dick's Sporting Goods, sell licenses over the counter.
  3. Telephone: Call 800-565-1458 to purchase over the phone.

Local Fishing Views and Adventure Gallery

Explore the visual beauty of Northern California and the Oregon coast through our curated collection of moments on the water. From the mist rising off the Sacramento River at dawn to the vibrant, golden sunsets over Shasta Lake, these photos capture the authentic atmosphere of a day spent with Jacob Frye’s Guide Service. You will see our 25’ Alumaweld boat cutting through the glassy surface of the river, surrounded by the rugged, pine-covered banks and local wildlife that call this region home. These images showcase the diverse landscapes of Anderson and Colusa, providing a glimpse into the serene environment that awaits you beyond the licensing and logistics.

Beyond the scenery, the gallery highlights the true stars of the show: the impressive variety of species our guests land throughout the year. Get a close-up look at the bright "chrome" scales of a King Salmon, the intricate patterns of a Rainbow Trout, and the prehistoric profile of a Sturgeon. You’ll also find photos of the comfortable local cabins and nearby landmarks that make this area a premier destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
