Half Day Rockfish and Lingcod Trip - Gold Beach

Captain Jacob Frye's newest offering for 2026 brings you straight to the productive rockpiles off Gold Beach's rugged coastline. This half-day charter starts at 3:00 PM and runs a solid 8 hours, giving you plenty of time to work the bottom structure where big lingcod and colorful rockfish call home. You'll fish from a stable 25-foot Alumaweld that handles the Pacific swells like a champ, making it perfect whether you're a weekend warrior or just getting your feet wet in saltwater fishing. With only 2 spots available, you get personal attention and prime positioning at the rail.

What to Expect on the Water

This trip targets the reef systems that Southern Oregon is famous for – underwater mountains covered in structure where fish stack up like apartments. Captain Jacob knows these spots like his backyard, and he'll position you right where the action happens. The afternoon departure gives you that golden light on the water and often coincides with prime feeding times for both rockfish and lingcod. You'll be fishing in 60 to 150 feet of water, depending on conditions and what's biting best. The boat's got all the amenities you need, and since it's just you and one other angler, there's no crowding or fighting for space. Bring your Oregon fishing license and any required ocean stamps – that's the only thing not covered in your trip cost.

Bottom Fishing Tactics & Gear

Jacob runs light tackle setups that make every fish feel like a monster, but they're still stout enough to handle the bruisers that live on these reefs. You'll be using circle hooks with fresh bait, working the structure with enough weight to stay connected to bottom in the current. The key is feeling that tick-tick-tick as your sinker bounces along the rocks – that's where the fish live. Jacob provides all rods, reels, tackle, and bait, so you just need to show up ready to fish. He'll teach you how to read your rod tip, when to set the hook, and how to work a fish up from the depths without losing it to the rocks. The Alumaweld's layout gives everyone easy access to the action, and the fish cleaning station makes processing your catch a breeze.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Vermilion Rockfish are the crown jewels of the Oregon rockfish world. These bright red beauties live in 80 to 200 feet of water and can reach 30 inches, though most you'll catch run 15 to 20 inches – perfect eating size. They're curious fish that often come up to investigate your bait, and when they bite, they bite hard. Summer through early fall gives you the best shot at vermilions, and Gold Beach's reefs are known for producing some true giants. What makes them special is that perfect flaky white meat that grills up like candy.

Lingcod are the prehistoric-looking bullies of the bottom, and they fight like they're mad about being hooked. These green-tinted predators can exceed 40 inches and 20 pounds, with teeth that look like they belong in a horror movie. They ambush prey from rocky caves and ledges, which makes them perfect targets for the structure fishing you'll be doing. Peak lingcod season runs from late spring through fall, and Gold Beach consistently produces fish in the 10 to 15-pound range. The meat is incredibly firm and versatile – perfect for fish and chips or blackened on the grill.

Black Rockfish school up in massive numbers and provide non-stop action when you find them. They typically run smaller than vermilions, averaging 12 to 16 inches, but they make up for size with sheer numbers and fighting spirit. These dark-bodied fish suspend off the bottom more than other rockfish species, so Captain Jacob might have you fishing at different depths throughout the trip. They're fantastic table fare and often the fish that gets new anglers hooked on bottom fishing. Black rockfish bite year-round, but late summer and early fall produce the most consistent action off Gold Beach.

Time to Book Your Spot

This half-day trip gives you a solid taste of what makes Gold Beach fishing special without burning a whole day. Captain Jacob's local knowledge and that intimate 2-person capacity mean you're getting a top-rated experience that bigger boats simply can't match. The afternoon timing works great if you want to explore Gold Beach in the morning, then hit the water when the fish are most active. With all gear provided and expert instruction included, you'll head home with a cooler full of fillets and stories worth telling. These small-boat charters fill up fast, especially during prime rockfish season, so don't wait too long to secure your dates.

Learn more about the species

Black Rockfish

These dark gray to black fish are some of the most reliable catches on our reefs and make great table fare. They average 4-5 pounds but can surprise you - the biggest recorded was over 11 pounds. You'll find them around rocky structure and jetties, often schooling with other rockfish species. They're aggressive feeders that'll hit just about anything you drop down, from jigs to cut bait. What's interesting is they get lighter with age - some old-timers turn almost white. They're not fast swimmers but put up a decent scrap. Watch those venomous spines on the dorsal fin when handling. My advice: use enough weight to get down quick - they live near bottom and won't chase bait up in the water column.

Black Rockfish

Lingcod

Don't let the name fool you - these aren't cod at all, but they're some of the most aggressive predators on our reefs. With their massive heads, wicked teeth, and mottled green-brown coloring, they look prehistoric. Females can hit 20+ pounds while males stay smaller. They lurk in rocky caves and ledges from 30-300 feet, ambushing anything that fits in their huge mouths. What guests love is their fierce fight and the fact they're cannibalistic - they'll eat their own kind! The meat is white, flaky, and outstanding. Best caught year-round on metal jigs worked near bottom. Pro tip: once hooked, keep steady pressure and don't give them slack - they'll use those rocks to cut your line if given the chance.

Lingcod

Vermilion Rockfish

These bright red beauties with their black-speckled backs are some of the prettiest fish you'll pull up from our local reefs. Most vermilion run 14-22 inches and fight harder than you'd expect for their size. They love hanging around rocky structure between 100-500 feet, which is perfect for our Gold Beach reefs. What makes them special is their rough, scaled jaw - helps tell them apart from similar species like canary rockfish. They're excellent eating and respond well to light tackle with small strips of squid. My tip: when you feel that first tap, don't set the hook too hard - their mouths are softer than lingcod and you'll pull right through if you're too aggressive.
